NEW LISTING!
A sublime Art Nouveau villa steps from the beaches of the Venice Lido
And gracing the front cover of May 2024’s ‘The World of Interiors’
Designed with a light-hearted quirkiness and playful spirit inspired by the laid-back vibe of Lido-living by Oscar-nominated film director Luca Guadagnino and his studio* (his new film ‘Queer’ starring Daniel Craig is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival 2024 where it’ll be competing for the Golden Lion), this pretty villa sleeps 6 guests in exclusive surroundings moments from the iconic Grand Hotel Des Bains, featured in Luchino Visconti’s 70’s masterpiece ‘Death in Venice’**.
Tucked away incognito behind its private furnished garden planted with roses, banana trees, wisteria and hibiscus, this once-neglected 1931 fin-de-siècle home by the sea has recently been elevated to an altogether higher level. Echoing the 1920s era and onwards when the Lido became the summer playground of Venetian society and the global rich and famous, its interior has been introduced to 21st century comforts and innovations and its welcoming spaces imbued with a curvaceousness that captivates and a carousel of colours that make this exceptional villa sing.
Within a sun-faded espadrille’s hop, skip and a jump of the numerous public and private sandy beaches that necklace the southern shores of this narrow Venetian island, and a refreshing add-on (or alternative!) to your usual Venice city-centre stay, the villa’s furnishings encompass pieces from the Milanese owners’ private collection with everything remaining designed and curated by the multi-talented Luca and his team.
Easy-breezy in personality yet never frivolous by design, the fully-air-conditioned Villa Mocenigo Garden boasts 3 chic double bedrooms / 3 luxurious bathrooms with accommodation over 3 floors comprising:
Ground Floor
Steps leading up to the entrance leading into the...
Semi-open-plan reception / sitting / dining area, a calm yet super-characterful space enveloped from top to toe in traditional polished ‘pastellone’ – a specialist finish seamlessly uniting walls with floors to gorgeous effect, note the whimsical ‘pie-crust’ cornicing drawing the eye – and furnished with individually designed rugs, hand-woven cotton/linen curtains by renowned Lombardy weavers, Gegia Bronzini, an enormous modular boucle curved sofa perfect for lounging after an oh-so-tiring (!) day at the beach or on the golf course, a pink lacquer dining table hosting 10 guests designed by Luca himself and, to the fore... a pair of shuttered doors leading out and down to the parterre garden via a dreamy creeper-clad loggia with a wrought-iron period patio set for taking tea for two or your aperitivo of choice
Stairs leading down to the
Lower Ground Floor, where we find:
A well-equipped bespoke kitchen decorated with hand-crafted tiles from Sicily and furnished with an Alvar Aalto table for Artek, Jasper Morrison chairs and lit by a ‘Lenticchia’ pendant light by Peter Zumthor for Viabizzuno
A separate service kitchen area to the side
An elegant double bedroom with double bed in pink and russet promising a blissful night’s sleep, and a pristine en suite bathroom with shower (and vibrantly coloured loo!)
Returning to the Ground Floor, stairs rise to the
Mezzanine Level, where we find:
A handy guest bathroom with (jaffa orange!) loo and wash-hand basin
Stairs continue to the
1st Floor and:
2 delightful dual-aspect double bedrooms of similar size and mirroring each other in their quietly luxurious style, with beautifully dressed double beds, wooden parquet flooring and a shared south-facing terrace to the fore...
One featuring a Venini 1970 chandelier, a Paavo Tynell 9602 floor lamp, its own side terrace and an ensuite bathroom with a deep bathtub in seaside cerulean blue
And the other featuring an Ignazio Gardella 1960 wall sconce, its own ‘terrazzino’ (bijou terrace) and, down a few steps, an en suite bathroom with shower in basilico green
*Established in 2017 by Luca Guadagnino, SLG (Studiolucaguadagnino) is a Milan-based interior architecture studio specialising in contemporary Mid-Century Italian design and renowned for its interior architecture that mirrors the narrative power, spatial mastery, and vibrant use of colour characteristic of his films. SLG manages contemporary projects for both private clients and luxury commercial spaces and in 2021 was featured in ‘By Design: The World's Best Contemporary Designers’, an authoritative guide published by Phaidon Press that selected 100 of today's best and most creative interior designers
** The 1971 historical drama film based on the book by Thomas Mann and starring Dirk Bogarde as Gustav Von Aschenbach, Bjorn Andresen as Tadzio and Silvana Mangano as his mother
OUR COMMENT
A simply wonderful villa restored to perfection which, despite its pedigree and hefty credentials, doesn’t take itself too seriously! Easy-going and welcoming in vibe and ideal as a special base for doing as much or as little as you like beside the sea, yet only a few minutes (by vaporetto) across the water to Venice’s historical centre for catching up on all the culture!
And SO many things to do right on your doorstep...!
For those of you attending (or watching the stars on the red carpet!) at the annual Venice International Film Festival, a very short walk to its official headquarters at Palazzo del Cinema and the Palazzo del Casinò.
Close to the Lido’s public and private beaches for a pampering spot of R & R (ask us for further details) including the famous Lungomare Marconi, and to the Circolo Golf Venezia – Venice’s only golf club, at Alberoni on the Lido’s western tip and amongst the oldest in Italy (accessible by taxi, bus or bike).
A gentle stroll to the shops, bars and cafes along the Lido’s central thoroughfare the ‘Gran Viale Santa Maria Elizabetta’ where you’ll find a well-stocked Conad supermarket (within a store called ‘OVS’) for stocking up on supplies, bicycle hire from the folks at Venice Scooter Rental for fun exploration of the Lido on two wheels (they also deliver!), and at the top of the avenue...the vaporetto (water bus) system for reaching Venice and its other islands (the Giardini / Biennale Pavilions are 9 minutes away, St Mark’s 16 minutes!), along with the Lido bus network serving the island, and the ‘Alilaguna’ boat service connecting the Lido with Venice’s Marco Polo Airport (Line Blue ‘Linea Blu’, and Line Red ‘Linea Rossa’).
Within easy reach of a variety of restaurants including Ristorante Gera Ora, Trattoria Andri, Trattoria La Battigia (and Chiosco Chiringuito if you’re hankering for a burger after all that Venetian seafood!) to name but a few...
Take Line 20 on the vaporetto to visit the exquisitely peaceful island, gardens and monastery of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, very close to the Lido and offering guided tours every day (check timings). Or for something completely different perhaps stop off at the little island of San Servolo (also easily reached on Line 20) with its ‘Museum of Madness’ and well-regarded restaurant ‘Robe da Matti’ for super dining in tranquillity well away from the bustle.
Or why not cook at home?! With the Lido’s weekly Farmers’ Market held every Friday from 7:30 am – 1pm on the Riva di Corinto (Mercatino delle Quattro Fontane) and a more general market held in the same location every Tuesday from 7am – 2pm selling everything from household items and clothing to fruit, veg, flowers, meat, fish and cheeses, you’ll be spoilt for choice when selecting ingredients for cooking up a storm back at the villa!
(And for travel writer and historian Robin Saikia’s very personal insight into the island of the Lido, take a look at his book ‘The Venice Lido’ published by Blue Guides – ‘the first ever full-length historical and cultural guide to Venice’s glamorous beach resort’.)
