Description
Featured in the June 2016 issue of Condé Nast Traveller magazine - ‘My Own Private Venice - the best apartments, palazzos & villas to take over as your own’ (Palazzo Alvera Altana)
Picture a palace....a bohemian beauty, lavish in luxury and whispering privilege. Now pass through its doors and embark on a journey through richness and opulence, true comfort and style.
Overlooking the Grand Canal, benefitting from two superb terraces and occupying the top two floors of the 16th Century 'Palazzo Corner Gheltoff Alvera' in the hushed and genteel San Samuele parish of San Marco, Ca' Dei Colori 1 ('House of Colours') sleeps eight in accommodation which can only be described as 'extraordinary'.
Reached via the Palazzo's private water entrance on the Grand Canal (if arriving by water taxi), or via its delightfully leafy private garden with ancient well-heads to the rear, the apartment combines vivid imagination and unflinching good taste with magnificent artistry and skilled craftsmanship all blending together to create a feast for the eyes and a joy for the senses.
Rewarding guests with delightful discoveries at every turn and conjuring up both the elegance of past times and an atmosphere reminiscent of the distant lands and ancient trade routes on which Venice built her vast historic empire, Ca' Dei Colori 1 (accessed by lift to the 4th floor) features well-proportioned living space and the latest facilities (including air-conditioning, internet connection and maid service on request).
At the centre of the antique-filled apartment is a fabulous beamed main living room/salon and reception hallway - effortlessly chic and decked out in precious oriental rugs, deep comfy sofas and walls lined with literature, portraiture and landscape paintings, off which is a splendid balcony overlooking the Grand Canal and the breathtaking city skyline.
The eat-in kitchen in jade greens, china blues and lacquer reds has a distinct oriental flavour and is expertly equipped with everything one could require, while the vaulted dining room with access onto a furnished terrace of its own is warm and intimate courtesy of its rich wooden flooring, shimmering silk and leather furnishings and subtle lighting.
Also on this level is a quaint and cosy sitting room and three beautifully attired double bedrooms - the softly feminine 'Rezzonico' bedroom with a double, a large closet area and an en suite bathroom with bathtub and separate shower, the 'Frari' bedroom with its sloping beamed ceiling ( with twins that can be made into a double) and marble-clad en suite bathroom with bathtub and the 'Rialto' bedroom with double bed and 'looking glass' features and an en suite bathroom with double-width shower.
A staircase from the reception hallway rising up to the deeply romantic 'San Marco' master suite with its strikingly painted wooden flooring and access at its far end to a wonderful 'altana' roof terrace overlooking the Grand Canal; a sumptuously decorated 'room at the top' presented in muted tones and featuring sloping ceilings, a study area with fabulous views of both St. Mark’s Campanile and the Rialto Bridge, a kilim cushion strewn day bed, plus a sleeping area with velvet draped double bed and en suite shower room which can be separated for enhanced privacy by closure of the double leaded glass doors and silk curtains dividing the room

OUR COMMENT
A remarkable property in a class of its own, highly individual and second to none.
Sharing the waterside with the famous Mocenigo family of palazzi and its landside with the many art galleries and antique shops characterising this sought after and very central part of the city. Within minutes of the Palazzo Grassi Museum of Modern Art, the Accademia Bridge / Academy of Fine Arts, the vaporetto (water bus) at San Samuele and Sant' Angelo, the ‘Traghetto’ gondola ferry which carries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal between Calle Del Tragheto (near Sant’ Angelo) and San Toma in the district of San Polo, and Campo Santo Stefano - one of Venice's best loved squares.

We had a wonderful stay in the apartment. The location was superb and the views from every balcony were delightful. We found the apartment to be extremely well equipped and very comfortable for 14 people....it always felt spacious. The roof terrace was the perfect venue for drinks and dinner in the evening and we had many happy hours there! All in all......a wonderful apartment that exceeded our expectations!

Ca’ Del Monastero 4 Introducing the very special Ca’ Del Monastero - a fine antique residence comprising 9 superbly restored apartments of varying size (including Ca’ Del Monastero 4 - see its dedicated section below) situated in what was once the monastery connected to the ancient Church of San Degolà (one of the oldest in Venice), moments from the Grand Canal in the district of Santa Croce. Enjoying an atmosphere of calm serenity in what must surely be one of Venice’s most evocative and unspoilt neighbourhoods - indeed a step back in time - the Ca’ Del Monastero apartments offer spacious and beautifully presented accommodation for small and medium size parties or up to 38 guests if taken together.* No expense has been spared in its recent remodelling… Carefully co-ordinated contemporary furnishings and soft neutral colours meld seamlessly against a traditional backdrop of polished red marble and/or traditional Venetian terrazzo flooring, while stylish high-spec fittings and attractive finishes, such as textured resin walls and luxurious feature wall coverings, give a fresh and fashionable twist to the building’s ancient framework. Enhanced by a range of up-to-date facilities as demanded by today’s savvy traveller (including air-conditioning**, Wi-Fi internet connection and communal utility facilities), the Ca’ Del Monastero apartments are perfectly placed for communing with the true and heart and soul of the city and for visiting all that Venice has to offer while providing all the comforts of modern city living. Ca’ Del Monastero 4 A hugely appealing dual-aspect apartment enjoying picturesque views of the Church, Campo and Rio de San Degolà to the front and the Salizada Dei Fondaco Dei Turchi to the rear, offering impressive accommodation for up to 8 guests. Showcasing elegance and pared-down simplicity at its best and situated on the 1st floor of the residence reached by lift or via a staircase rising from the splendid ‘chequerboard’ marble-floored communal entrance hallway on the floor below, accommodation comprises a full-length main sitting/dining room with Venetian terrazzo flooring and tall ceilings which echoes the traditional layout of many Venetian ‘Piano Nobili’. Of fine proportions and topped with beautiful painted beams dotted with glass chandeliers, the room offers plenty of seating and a modern style dining suite quirkily offset by two fun and fabulous Rococo-style armchairs. To one side of the main central room sits the well-equipped and fully-fitted kitchen/breakfast room, while the other leads to two well-dressed double bedrooms - one to the front with feature fireplace (not in use) and one to the rear and both with their own en-suite and up-to-date bathrooms (one with a large shower, the other with a bathtub and shower over, and both beautifully appointed). In between the two bedrooms sits a further small bedroom/snug with a sofa/’pull out’ bed sleeping 2, while a fourth bedroom with a double bed (can be made into twins - simply ask when booking) and an en-suite service bathroom (w.c. and wash hand basin only) sits to the front of the apartment on the opposite side. *Are you a part of a larger group who’d like to stay close together but in separate apartments? We offer seven other apartments within this residence: Ca’ Del Monastero 1,Ca’ Del Monastero 2, Ca’ Del Monastero 3, Ca’ Del Monastero 5, Ca’ Del Monastero 6, Ca’ Del Monastero 7, Ca’ Del Monastero 8, Ca’ Del Monastero 9. Our Comment Style, creature comforts and history combined, in an area brimming with local flavour. Within easy walking distance of Venice’s Santa Lucia Railway Station and Piazzale Roma if travelling light, and even closer to the vaporetto (waterbus) stops at Riva di Biasio and San Stae on the Grand Canal for hassle-free travel around the city. And so much to see and do right on your doorstep… Moments to Campo San Giacomo Dell’ Orio - one of Venice’s most charming ‘away from the crowds’ tree-filled squares and home to a well-stocked Coop supermarket and nearby local shops - and a short walk to a Conad supermarket on the Rio Marin canal. Close to a great variety of cafes, bars and eateries including All’ Anfora, La Zucca, Il Refolo, Al Prosecco and Antica Besseta to name but a few, and within minutes of the Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art, Palazzo Mocenigo at San Stae (Museum of the History of Fabrics, Costumes and Perfumes) and the Fondazione Prada at Ca’ Corner Della Regina. A leisurely stroll to the 14th Century Franciscan Church of the Frari, (home to Canova's extraordinary triangular marble tomb and Titian's legendary masterpiece, the 'Assumption'), the Scuola Grande di San Rocco with its amazing Tintoretto’s, the vast palazzo-lined Campo San Polo plus the culinary delights and buzz of the Rialto. **Please note that the operation of air-conditioning and heating are subject to municipality regulation. In general, heating is available from mid-October to mid-April, while air-conditioning is available from mid-April to mid-October. Please contact us for further information.
