Description
A dream address for 4 guests boasting 2 terraces – and the perfect base for Venice-lovers who’ve been away for far too long!
Bathed in light atop a property on the Cannaregio / Castello border in a district where you can choose to be as busy or as laid-back as you please, we’re delighted to share the details of this peaceful 3rd floor penthouse between Santi Giovanni e Paolo and Campo Santa Maria Formosa.
Within easy reach of St. Mark’s Square and the Biennale Pavilions at Arsenale (and where chatty locals going about their day seem to outnumber tourists who’ve lost their way!), this newly restored apartment features 2 quietly stylish bedrooms and all the accoutrements required for a perfect Venetian holiday.
Combining a creamy white colourway and contemporary furnishings with beautiful aged beams and warm timber flooring, its aesthetic is one of comfort, modern elegance and easy living, while its pair of gorgeous terraces add a fabulous ‘al fresco’ dimension to your stay.
Airy, cheerful and boasting rooftop views along the characterful street known as Barbaria de le Tole taking in the monumental statues on the façade of the nearby church of the Ospedaletto (Santa Maria dei Derelitti), the air-conditioned Colleoni Terrace offers Wi-Fi and a washing machine within spacious accommodation comprising:
A communal doorway / entrance with stairs (no lift) rising up to the:
3rd (top) Floor
• A private doorway leading into the apartment’s…
• Entrance hallway
• A wonderfully welcoming sitting / dining room with a large L-shaped sofa, dining suite for 4 lit by a low-hanging crystal chandelier, and a glass door leading out onto a long furnished terrace dotted with a plethora of plants and shaded by retractable awnings during the lazy hazy days of a Venetian summer
• A modern well-equipped galley-style kitchen, which also opens out onto the above-mentioned furnished terrace making the prep and serving of your apertivi with nibbles a doddle!
• An attractive principal bedroom with double bed, wardrobe and a glazed door leading out onto a 2nd south-facing terrace with retractable awnings – shared with the 2nd bedroom and overlooking the quiet inner Corte del Parucchier (Courtyard of the Hairdresser) with its ancient well-head… so much history! – plus a smart en suite bathroom with tiled shower
• A similarly attired double bedroom with double bed (which can be made into twins at your request), wardrobe, writing desk / workspace and a glazed door leading out onto the 2nd south-facing terrace shared with the principal bedroom
• A further separate contemporary bathroom, also with tiled shower
OUR COMMENT
Named after the striking 15th-century bronze equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni standing proud at the centre of the café-and-canal-fringed Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo nearby, a ‘TERRAZZA-TASTIC’ new addition to the VOV portfolio offering wonderful accommodation both inside and out!
Sitting at the edges of Venice’s busier commercial heart in an area more in-tune with the genuine Venetian neighbourhoods characterised by gently flapping washing lines, sun-dappled courtyards and labyrinthine alleyways just waiting to be discovered, Colleoni Terrace is within a stone's throw of the monumental Dominican Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo (known as 'Zanipolo' in dialect - one of the largest churches in Venice and burial place of no fewer than 25 Venetian Doges) and on the 'right' side of town for visiting the Biennale Pavilions at Arsenale and Giardini.
A gentle walk to St. Mark’s Square (and to Palazzo Grimani and the much-photgraphed Libreria Acqua Alta bookshop both near the wonderful Campo Santa Maria Formosa), the richly atmospheric Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni with its paintings by Carpaccio, the famous Rialto Bridge and its food markets, and the dainty jewel-box church of Santa Maria Dei Miracoli – so pretty…
Within moments of a great selection of cafes, bars and restaurants including Spaghetteria 6342 A Le Tole Pizzeria/Ristorante, Osteria Alla Staffa, Trattoria Bandierette, Osteria al Mascaron and the small local shops along Barbaria de le Tole…
And within easy reach of Salizada San Giustina (where you’ll find the splendid old-style Gastronomia Ortis, a grocery shop since 1914), the little shops of Salizada San Francesco, the 'Punto Simply' supermarket near San Lorenzo, the COOP Querini supermarket on the Fondamente Nove and the COOP at Calle Del Mondo Novo (near Santa Maria Formosa) for all your self-catering needs.
Also close to the vaporetto (water bus) stop at Ospedale (with no bridges to cross in between) for easy travel around the city, trips to beaches of the Lido and visits to the glass-blowing island of Murano, the rainbow-coloured island of Burano and the ancient island of Torcello with its 7th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

Loved the area and the convenience of shops, bars, supermarket and water bus stop. The apartment had everything we could wish for and the terrace was perfect.

Umbrellas would have been useful, as would a few bottles of water left in the fridge.

The apartment was immaculate and well-appointed. The large terrace is the highlight of the property. An electrically-operated retractable canopy makes the terrace pleasant at any time of the day, offering beautiful views and sounds of the city. The property is outside of the most crowded area of Venice but within an approximately 10-minute direct walk to the Piazza San Marco area. A decent COOP grocery store is about 5 minutes from the property, and various other smaller grocery stores are within steps, on the same street. The management team was very helpful and responsive. Located at the 3rd (top) floor of the building, the apartment is only accessibly by stairs but this did not feel strenuous to any of us (all in our 50s). We highly recommend this property, which we would definitely try to book again next time in Venice.

Lovely apartment which is in a really good location and within easy walking distance to a lot of sights with cafes and restaurants close by. We enjoyed having the terrace to sit out on but be aware that there are a lot of stairs if mobility is an issue. Communication from the team was excellent and being met at the apartment was a real boon as it allows you to ask questions face to face. They also organised transfers for us and this was also an excellent service.

An ancient canal-side palace within minutes of St. Mark’s Square. Hidden away on its landside within the secret courtyard ‘Corte Rubbi’, on the Castello/San Marco border, this once forgotten building has been magically transformed by restorers with vision and interior design savoir-faire. Standing at the gondola-busy T-junction of the San Zulian and Bareteri canals, and encapsulating 10 dazzling apartments of varying colourway and size, the newly launched Corte Rubbi is but a stroll to some of Venice’s most iconic attractions and countless beguiling vistas on which to feast your eyes! Easy to find (when you know the way!) from the shop-lined Campo San Bartolomeo and Salizada San Lio on one of Venice’s canal-encircled ‘islands within an island’, these imaginatively furnished apartments offer Wi-Fi and a communal laundry room and are spread across 4 floors with all upper floors reached by stairs. Highly contemporary in style, air-conditioned** throughout and ranging from a charming studio for 4 to a fabulous penthouse with rooftop terrace, Corte Rubbi’s 10 apartments sleep up to 42 guests if booked exclusively and include: Corte Rubbi 5 – on the 2nd Floor reached by stairs – sleeping 2+1 A beautifully attired bijou studio enjoying canal views from its 2 windows to the fore and comprising: A charming main living / dining / sleeping area in fashionably clashing shades of flamingo pink and scarlet with Venetian terrazzo flooring, wooden beamed ceiling, a double bed with twin bunk beds to the rear, a well-equipped kitchenette for light cooking, and a dining area seating 4 A luxurious bathroom to the side with marble walls and chromotherapy shower Are you part of a larger group who’d like to stay close together but in separate apartments? We offer 9 other apartments within this palazzo: Corte Rubbi 1, Corte Rubbi 3, Corte Rubbi 6, Corte Rubbi 8, Corte Rubbi 9, Corte Rubbi 10, Corte Rubbi 11 and Corte Rubbi 5514 OUR COMMENT A bijou studio for 4 bursting with colour and joie de vivre, in a vibrant, central and endlessly fascinating part of town. A few steps away from the 18th-century church of Santa Maria Della Fava and close to a host of famous sights and attractions including the atmospheric Venetian time-capsule that is the Querini Stampalia, the fabulous Palazzo Grimani just off Campo Santa Maria Formosa, the Church of San Zaccaria with its crypt and wonderful Bellini altarpiece, and Vivaldi’s La Pietà on the sunny Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront… … A short stroll towards a very sedate pace of life lived out amongst the tranquil calles, canals and green spaces of Castello with its laid-back and very genuine neighbourhood vibe… … Or rise with the lark to embrace the atmosphere of St. Mark’s Square (‘the Piazza’) gloriously near-empty before its visitors arrive… or visit at night when the orchestras of Quadri and Florian play*, the bells of the Campanile (bell tower) toll, the marble of the Doge’s Palace glows, and the mosaics of the Basilica shimmer in the darkness… Close to a host of shops, restaurants and bars including the much-lauded Alle Testiere, the upmarket Bistrot de Venise and Alle Corone of the nearby Hotel Reali, the charming Osteria Al Portego (delicious cicheti!) and Osteria Ae Sconte, plus Ristorante Santa Maria Formosa with its tables on the campo. Also within easy reach of 4 well-stocked supermarkets – a Despar at Calle al Ponte de la Guerra, a COOP at Salizada San Lio, and a COOP and a Despar on the Riva del Carbon (near the Rialto Bridge), along with a ‘Vino Sfuso’ (wine on tap) shop on Calle del Mondo Novo and a greengrocer’s stand at Campo Santa Maria Formosa. Within a short stroll of the vaporetto (water bus) stop at Rialto for exploring the city, the ‘Traghetto’ gondola ferry carrying passengers across the Grand Canal between the Riva Del Carbon and San Silvestro in the San Polo district and the vaporetto (water bus) stop at San Zaccaria for trips around town, visits to the Lido beaches and to the Biennale Pavilions at Arsenale and Giardini. *Note that performances are dependent on weather and season **Please note that the operation of air conditioning and heating are subjected to the municipality regulation. Generally, the heating works from middle of October to middle of April, while air conditioning works between middle of Aprile to middle of October.
