Description
As featured in The Telegraph online January 2018 - ‘Live like a local: why a holiday apartment is a great option for a Venice city break’ - by Fiona Duncan, Hotel Expert, and in The London Evening Standard Homes & Property online November 2018
Sojourn in Style in a Serene Palazzo Setting and Unlock the Secrets of Palazzo Vendramin…
… A rare collection of fine luxury apartments expertly created within a 15th century canal-side palace near the Church of Santa Fosca in the heart of Cannaregio.
Sensitively steered into the 21st century under the direction of noted Venetian architect Alberto Torsello and interior design team Zanon Associati, Palazzo Vendramin provides a calm, unruffled and historically fascinating backdrop to 3 exceptional new apartments (including Varoter – see its dedicated section below).
Integrating chic Italian design with meticulously restored architectural details such as Venetian terrazzo flooring and colourful frescoes, these remarkable properties range from a well-proportioned studio with shared furnished courtyard, to a bright and beautiful 2 bedroom Piano Nobile apartment, each offering guests a unique opportunity to sample the joys of elegant palazzo living in one of the most authentic Venetian districts of town.
Standing imposingly on the Fondamenta de Ca’ Vendramin, between the Rio di Santa Fosca and Rio del Trapolin canals well hidden from the tourist footfall yet with an excellent variety of local amenities very close at hand, these impressive apartments enjoy the best of both worlds.
Thought to have once been home to the large and illustrious Vendramin family (merchants trading in oil, cheese and salted meat, and producers and sellers of soap - the latter bringing them great fame and fortune over time), and representing a harmonious blend of the historical and the contemporary, its cavernous communal ‘androne’ hallway with majestic stone staircase and walls embellished with modern art and frescoes provides a fitting welcome to the Palazzo at the start of your stay.
Note that the Palazzo can be reached by private water taxi for easy arrivals and departures from within a few shorts steps of the main Palazzo entrance and that all 8 apartments offer air-conditioning*** throughout and Wi-Fi as standard.
And with a nostalgic nod to a bygone era, the Palazzo Vendramin apartments have each been named in homage to Venice’s traditional tradesmen and craftsmen, or ‘mestieri’, who in times past would have been familiar characters within ‘La Serenissima’s’ labyrinth of ‘calli’ and ‘campi’.
Varoter – The Leather Worker
An exquisite pied-à-terre on the second floor to the front of the Palazzo (reached by lift) - large, bright and featuring a fabulously tall frescoed ceiling, Venetian terrazzo flooring, a mezzanine bedroom above, and French windows opening onto a long marble balcony overlooking the tranquil Rio di Santa Fosca Canal.
Sleeping 2 (+2) guests, its accommodation comprises –
- An entrance lobby
- An open-plan main sitting/dining room furnished with a plush double sofa bed, a pair of leather Barcelona chairs with matching footstools, and a dining suite seating 4 beneath the mezzanine above
- A well-equipped kitchenette with immaculate brushed stainless steel units
- A pristine bathroom with a traditional style bathroom suite and large modern shower
Glass balustraded staircase with wooden treads rising to
- A glass sided mezzanine, home to a double bed set upon polished wooden flooring and gazing up at the spectacular frescoed ceiling overhead!
**Are you a part of a larger group who’d like to stay close together but in separate apartments? We have 2 other apartments within the Palazzo: , Sartor and Spezier.
OUR COMMENT
A beautifully furnished jewel of an apartment in a privileged position in the Cannaregio ‘sestiere’…
… A much-loved district with a traditional old-world charm characterised by peaceful residential areas, a host of historic landmarks including the spectacular fairy tale Ca’ d’Oro and the ancient Jewish Ghetto, plus long and wide canal-side ‘fondamente’ including the Fondamente de la Misericordia and de la Sensa (with their fabulous selection of local restaurants and ‘bacari’ – including our favourites Anice Stellato, Paradiso Perduto, Vino Vero and the new-ish - and characterful - bookshop-bistrot-cafe Sullaluna), plus the Fondamente Nove – Venice’s northern waterfront overlooking the waters of the lagoon towards the distant peaks of the Dolomite mountains.
Within an easy stroll of some wonderful churches including the dainty jewel-box Santa Maria dei Miracoli, the Gesuiti with its towering white façade and statues of the Apostles, and Madonna dell’ Orto - final resting place of the painter Tintoretto who lived nearby.
Close to the Strada Nova where you find shops galore to satisfy all your shopping needs! plus a well stocked Coop Supermarket at San Felice.
Convenient to 3 vaporetto (water bus) stops – San Marcuola (Casinò), Ca’ d’Oro and Madonna dell’ Orto – the latter allowing for easy travel to the beaches of the Lido and to the glass-blowing island of Murano, with connections at Fondamente Nove to the rainbow-coloured island of Burano and the island of Torcello.
Also a stone’s throw to the traghetto at Campo Santa Sofia, which during operating times, ferries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal to the Rialto Market in the district of San Polo.
***Please note that the operation of air conditioning and heating are subjected to the municipality regulation. Generally, the heating works from middle of October to middle of April, while air conditioning works between middle of Aprile to middle of October. Please contact us for further information.
For arrivals between 8.00 p.m. and midnight there is an additional cost for "late arrival" of Euro 50, to be paid in cash upon arrival. We organize arrivals between midnight and one o'clock with an additional cost of Euro 100, after this time we reserve the right to accept the customer always with a supplement to be quantified according to the time of arrival.

With thanks to Marco for guiding me to the apartment and getting me settled in. The apartment is a short, but interesting walk from the Aligaguna stop. Ideally situated for the best bar in town and the bars and restaurants on Fondamenta de la Misericordia. There's a supermarket just around the corner. There's also a cracking takeaway pizzeria 5 minutes walk away. A brisk 10 minute walk gets one to the vaporetto on the Canal Grande. The apartment is set in an imposing but quiet old house. Very clean, very tidy and equipped with everything that one needs for a short stay. |

There's a great view from the huge windows in the living area, not shown in photos for the apartment.

The apartment was stunning. We had a wonderful stay. There was great communication and a representative met us at the water taxi stop to walk us to the apartment which was very helpful. Great location and we were so sad to leave. Missing it already!

The apartment is stylish with a minimalist touch, furnished and equipped to a very high standard and the location perfect. The service provided was exactly in the fashion we prefer, attentive and prompt when needed, otherwise in the background. We had a fantastic stay and got to experience Venice in a less touristy, more explorative way. As we like to walk,
it was very rewarding to get to know Venice on a whole. We definitely benefited from a non-weekend stay and got to enjoy even central parts without the hordes. Mondays seem quietest. |

Building works opposite start early but that’s just the way it is. The canals can get busy but night time is respected. So there isn’t really anything that could have been improved.

This is a beautiful apartment in an absolutely wonderful location, overlooking a lovely little canal, which is, nevertheless, busy with water traffic, so there is lots to view from the balcony. It is not far from the Grand Canal, and very close to the Strada Nuova, a major shopping street, but is quiet. We were most impressed by the Information Book provided by VOV, probably the best such we have encountered in many years of travelling. We loved Venice, its canals and little streets and campiellos, and it was always great to come home to Varoter and its lovely frescoed ceiling.

Ca’ Del Monastero 8 Introducing the very special Ca’ Del Monastero - a fine antique residence comprising 9 superbly restored apartments of varying size (including Ca’ Del Monastero 8 - see its dedicated section below) situated in what was once the monastery connected to the ancient Church of San Zan Degolà (one of the oldest in Venice), moments from the Grand Canal in the district of Santa Croce. Enjoying an atmosphere of calm serenity in what must surely be one of Venice’s most evocative and unspoilt neighbourhoods - indeed a step back in time - the Ca’ Del Monastero apartments offer spacious and beautifully presented accommodation for small and medium size parties or up to 38 guests if taken together.* No expense has been spared in its recent remodelling… Carefully co-ordinated contemporary furnishings and soft neutral colours meld seamlessly against a traditional backdrop of polished red marble and/or traditional Venetian terrazzo flooring, while stylish high-spec fittings and attractive finishes, such as textured resin walls and luxurious feature wall coverings, give a fresh and fashionable twist to the building’s ancient framework. Enhanced by a range of up-to-date facilities as demanded by today’s savvy traveller (including air-conditioning***, Wi-Fi internet connection and communal utility facilities), the Ca’ Del Monastero apartments are perfectly placed for communing with the true and heart and soul of the city and for visiting all that Venice has to offer while providing all the comforts of modern city living. Ca’ Del Monastero 8 Neat, petite, convenient and sweet! – A brand new addition to the Ca’ Del Monastero residence, offering 1 bedroom/1 bathroom plus a shared furnished courtyard** Situated to the rear of the building with views over the ‘Salizada’ to the pretty walled rear garden of Venice’s Natural History Museum at the Fondaco Dei Turchi, the apartment sleeps 2 in comfort on the 2nd floor reached by stairs. Accessed via an entrance on the Salizada below (note the plaque on the wall dedicated to Don Luigi Caburlotto who, in this house in 1850, founded the religious ‘Institute of the Daughters of San Giuseppe’), the apartment comprises a cosy main sitting room decorated in restful coffee colours leading to a well-equipped and fully-fitted kitchen/dining room, while at the opposite end of the apartment lies the well-proportioned bedroom with double bed and plenty of storage, and to its side, the apartment’s modern bathroom with shower. And last but not least, access on the ground floor to the shared internal furnished courtyard – a little haven of calm set away from the world! * Are you a part of a larger group who’d like to stay close together but in separate apartments? We offer seven other apartments within this residence: Ca’ Del Monastero 1, Ca’ Del Monastero 2, Ca’ Del Monastero 3, Ca’ Del Monastero 4, Ca’ Del Monastero 5,Ca’ Del Monastero 6, Ca’ Del Monastero 7, Ca’ Del Monastero 9. ** Please note that the furnished internal courtyard is shared with guests of Ca’ Del Monastero 5 Our Comment Style, creature comforts and history combined, in an area brimming with local flavour. Within easy walking distance of Venice’s Santa Lucia Railway Station and Piazzale Roma if travelling light, and even closer to the vaporetto (waterbus) stops at Riva di Biasio and San Stae on the Grand Canal for hassle-free travel around the city. And so much to see and do right on your doorstep… Moments to Campo San Giacomo Dell’ Orio - one of Venice’s most charming ‘away from the crowds’ tree-filled squares and home to a well-stocked Coop supermarket and nearby local shops - and a short walk to a Conad supermarket on the Rio Marin canal. Close to a great variety of cafes, bars and eateries including All’ Anfora, La Zucca, Il Refolo, Al Prosecco and Antica Besseta to name but a few, and within minutes of the Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art, Palazzo Mocenigo at San Stae (Museum of the History of Fabrics, Costumes and Perfumes) and the Fondazione Prada at Ca’ Corner Della Regina. A leisurely stroll to the 14th Century Franciscan Church of the Frari, (home to Canova's extraordinary triangular marble tomb and Titian's legendary masterpiece, the 'Assumption'), the Scuola Grande di San Rocco with its amazing Tintoretto’s, the vast palazzo-lined Campo San Polo plus the culinary delights and buzz of the Rialto. ***Please note that the operation of air-conditioning and heating are subject to municipality regulation. An ancient canal-side palace within minutes of St. Mark’s Square.
